A Metaphor of the Coming Carnage

East Mosul, Iraq

April 18, 2017

A twisted chunk of metal that was once a car sits ominously beside a back street in Mosul, Iraq.

It sits as a metaphor and reminder of the coming destruction and carnage that will ensue when the final push into West Mosul begins.

Thousands of Iraqi lives hang in the balance of the coming storm and it's clear that victory will require the payment of a heavy price. But the Iraqi Army is ready and willing to pay it.

As I write this, Iraqi soldiers are busy making their preparations for the coming days of battle. Despite the impending sacrifice that these frontline soldiers will soon be asked to pay, the mood is light and morale is high.

Liberty is on the march, and it's a beautiful thing to behold.
