Car Bomb in Mosul

On May 4, 2017 the Iraqi 9th Armored Division asaulted West Mosul.

We immediately came under heavy sniper, machine gun, and mortar fire as the armor pushed across the plains into the city. I was back with General Mustafa working as a medic when this car bomb hit the forward most troops.

Caught in the crossfire, you can see a group a civilians running across the open field to our position. Right after I shot this video, two volunteers ran under fire to help the slowest member of the group, an elderly lady who was walking barefoot and trying to carry two bags.

The front member of the group, a young man, carried his dying grandfather on his back the entire way. A few seconds after giving over his grandfather to us, the young man was hit by shrapnel from a mortar. It tore through both of his ankles leaving him unable to move.

I treated him and he was evacuated with his grandfather. Dozens of more civilians have been shot and killed by ISIS snipers and mortars in the last 48 hours.

This was just the first few minutes of day one.
