An Iraqi medic takes a rest after a long and terrible night of treating casualties

Mosul, Iraq

May 16, 2017

In an abandoned house in the Musharifa neighborhood of West Mosul, the lead surgeon for Iraq's 36th Brigade rests after a long and terrible night of treating casualties.

The Iraqis turned the location into a field hospital known as a Casualty Collection Point, or CCP. Casualties from the front line are taken to this temporary rear position for emergency medical treatment. They will be transported from the CCP to a regular hospital if appropriate, but only after visiting the CCP.

The house was once occupied by ISIS before they were pushed back and the area recaptured by Iraqi forces. Medical supplies and an ammo cache lie at the foot of his bed along with food and chai tea for a late morning breakfast.

After I took this photo he invited me to join him and the others for a simple breakfast of simmered tomatoes and onions with bread and chai tea.
